ISS is an interspinous device made in titanium alloy, without pedicular screws or ligament, allowing distraction and compression. It is especially designed to be inserted between two spinous processes at the lumbar spinal level where it is fixed to the processes using titanium alloy pins, although their use is optional. The aim of the system is to place the symptomatic spinal segments in slight flexion and help prevent extension.
ISS is a relatively non-destructive procedure which preserves the majority of the bony, ligamentous and muscle structures whilst endeavouring to offload the painful motion segment and alleviate the patient’s pain.
